Gray's Bay Project Forges Ahead: The World Needs More Canada

Northern Infrastructure development took a big step forward recently. The Gray’s Bay Port Project and the Mackenzie Highway both being referred to the major projects office for national interest designations.

These projects will benefit from a $32 billion federal government fund for Arctic development and further money from North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) defence spending. New airfields, ports, all weather roads and radar stations will expand our defence footprint and create new economic opportunities.

Defence infrastructure allows the development of critical mineral mines strengthening the western alliance, weaning us off Russian and Chinese sources of vital military supplies. Federal money primes the pump but local commercial viability ensures long-term economic sustainability.

Once again, it is clear that the world needs more Canada.

According to a recent CBC article: "In keeping with Carney's emphasis on leveraging defence spending to boost the economy and investment, the package announced … contains a series of civilian airport improvements — Rankin Inlet and Inuvik — and major road construction projects … The roadwork includes a further extension of the Mackenzie Highway, connecting Yellowknife to Inuvik with the intention of opening up commercial opportunities along the route. In addition, the federal government plans on developing the Gray's Bay road and port in order to connect it to the national highway system.

West Kitikmeot Resources Corp (WKR) is taking the lead on the Gray’s Bay development as an Indigenous-owned company with deep support from local communities. Support from First Nations is essential for advancing these National Projects.

From the WKR website: WKR is the proponent and developer of the Gray's Bay Road and Port (GBRP) Project. GBRP is a multi-user, multi-purpose asset that will further assert Inuit and Canadian sovereignty over the Northwest Passage. It is a vital infrastructure corridor between Southern Canada and the Kitikmeot. The project will be key to unlocking the critical minerals wealth of the Kitikmeot, and will be a driver of new opportunities for Kitikmeot Inuit.

The initial Gray’s Bay highway will link mines to the coast with a seasonal road reaching Yellowknife and Southern Canada. An all weather road will come later for year round access. Meanwhile, the Mackenzie Highway extension will connect Yellowknife directly to Inuvik and the deepwater port of Tuktoyaktuk for the first time.

This model of public and private investment in First Nations led projects will continue to open up Canada’s North and bring benefits to us and our allies.
