Smith and Ford bring energy market-access push to Calgary

Alberta Premier Danielle Smith and Ontario Premier Doug Ford are scheduled to appear together in downtown Calgary Monday for a discussion focused on Canadian energy and natural-resource development. The premiers are expected to examine how Canada can move more of its resources to market as geopolitical conflict and the continuing trade dispute with the United States reshape global supply chains.

The appearance brings together Canada’s largest oil-producing province and its most populous manufacturing province. Alberta wants additional export capacity and fewer barriers to major projects, while Ontario’s industries depend heavily on reliable and competitively priced energy. Stronger east-west infrastructure could also reduce regional reliance on imported fuel and lessen Canada’s exposure to disruptions in American trade.

The significance of the event will depend on whether the premiers move beyond broad statements of support. No new pipeline, interprovincial corridor, funding commitment or construction schedule was disclosed in advance. Any concrete proposal would still require financing, regulatory approvals and agreement from the governments and Indigenous nations along its route.
