BC Conservative Leadership Race: Timeline and Rules

The Conservative Party of British Columbia has launched a formal leadership contest to select a permanent leader following the resignation of John Rustad in late 2025 amid internal party disputes. Rustad’s departure, marked by a caucus revolt and a brief dispute over leadership authority, cleared the way for a new leadership election process. Interim leader Trevor Halford is serving pending the outcome of the race.

Election Timeline

  • Race Launch: The party formally opened its leadership race in January 2026.
  • Nomination Period: Prospective candidates must submit applications by February 15, 2026, including necessary endorsements.
  • Voting Window: Ballots will be distributed to eligible members no later than May 9, 2026, and voting will continue through May 30, 2026, the date scheduled for the new leader announcement at the party’s leadership convention.
  • Membership Cut-Off: Members must be in good standing by April 18, 2026 at 5:00 p.m. PT to be eligible to vote.

The leadership contest is structured to culminate with the results publicized during the party’s leadership convention on May 30, 2026.

Eligibility and Voting Rules

Only members “in good standing” with the party by the membership deadline may receive and cast a ballot. This includes properly purchased memberships with verified personal information and compliance with party membership requirements.

The voting system used in this contest is a weighted preferential ballot. Under this method, each provincial riding receives an equal allocation of points that are awarded in proportion to votes received, with candidate eliminations and vote transfers occurring through successive counting rounds until a candidate earns more than 50 % of available points.

Candidacy Requirements

Prospective leadership candidates must meet a series of eligibility and financial requirements set by the party’s leadership election committee. These include:

  • Application Fees: Candidates are required to pay a non-refundable application fee, a refundable compliance deposit, and other fees totaling a substantial amount to remain on the ballot.
  • Endorsements: Applicants must submit a minimum number of member signatures from across different regions of the province to demonstrate broad support.
  • Spending Cap: The race contains an overall campaign spending limit to promote fairness and financial accountability; a portion of monthly donations must be remitted directly to the party.

Candidates must also sign a pledge to support the eventual winner of the leadership contest, reinforcing party unity regardless of the outcome.

Next Steps in the Process

Once nominations close and candidates are certified, the official leadership campaign period commences. Members in good standing will receive ballots ahead of the scheduled voting period, and the preferential ballot system will determine the winner through successive rounds if necessary. The announcement of the new leader on May 30, 2026, will conclude the contest and establish the party’s permanent leadership.
