Red Chris Mine Expansion: A Boost for BC’s Critical Minerals Sector

British Columbia has approved a major underground expansion of the Red Chris copper and gold mine in northwest B.C., south of Dease Lake. Announced by Premier David Eby on June 19, 2026, the project—owned by Newmont Corp.—will extend the life of the existing open-pit operation through a block cave mining method, prolonging production until at least 2038.
The expansion is expected to create approximately 1,800 jobs during peak construction while protecting the current 1,500 permanent positions and increasing ore processing capacity. Valued at around $3 billion, it represents a significant step in advancing the province’s critical minerals strategy.
The approval followed a comprehensive, consent-based review process involving amendments to the Mines Act and Environmental Management Act permits, in close partnership with the Tahltan Nation. Premier Eby highlighted how such agreements with First Nations, combined with a predictable regulatory pathway, provide the certainty needed to advance major projects.
Union leaders, including from the United Steelworkers, have expressed support, noting the potential for good, family-supporting jobs and strong Indigenous partnerships. The project now moves toward a final investment decision by Newmont later this year.
