Alberta Ends Public Sector DEI Hiring
Alberta is proposing new restrictions on how public institutions use diversity, equity and inclusion policies in hiring, promotions and employee training.

Alberta is proposing new restrictions on how public institutions use diversity, equity and inclusion policies in hiring, promotions and employee training.
The legislation would require covered organizations to base employment decisions on qualifications and merit rather than DEI criteria. The rules would apply to municipalities, school boards, post-secondary institutions, Crown corporations and public agencies, with some provincially funded non-profits potentially added through future regulations.
The bill would also prohibit mandatory DEI training unless it is necessary for a particular job and require other compulsory workplace training to be focused on job-related skills and duties.
Premier Danielle Smith says the changes are intended to ensure applicants receive equal consideration based on their experience and qualifications.
